As every month we manage a Saturday meeting to talk about KDE. The LUG Toulibre is helping us to have rooms and things like that. What ever !

Today Romain Perrier came from Bordeaux to explain us what is phonon, and its basic uses. Every one enjoyed the well-done workshop following the show. I did a movie player which at its end were looking like that.

The group were okay and we enjoyed to see old members come back to us! We’ve taken some free pictures of the working room…

Well… working… kind of…

The interest of having a workshop after the presentation seems to be obvious, but it works well for us. We manipulated what was the point of the presentation, we tried it for real. We understood how easy and powerful phonon is to use. We worked as a group, which means that every body tried to help each other and that was great.

Thanks, to Romain and all participants for this day!

During the Desktop Summit we had a BoF KDE France in order to discuss a bit on the way to improve promotion of KDE software in France, you can have a resume here.

In this BoF we have an interesting discussion on the way to collaborate more on promotional material, like presentation, demonstration script…

Of course doing that at the French level is really interesting because we can share the effort to have this and win some time. However I think to have this in a worldwide side can be a great benefits for KDE perhaps some stuff like that already exists but I found nothings.

Presentations

The main goal of presentation is to present a subject at a local area level, for example my LUG in Toulouse, France allow people to present something one Wednesday over two. So if I create a presentation for one of this call I think I can easily share it with other person like someone in Paris and he cans do the same presentation in Paris.

If we imply translator team we can have this kind of initiative all around the world by translating all our presentation material.

Demonstration script

So to do a demonstration in a linux conference or another event is not an easy thing to do. Indeed, there is a question about what I need to present to user and the question is really more complicated because there are lots of kind of users. Some users don’t know what is Free Software, others know Free Software but not KDE or can know KDE…

So to doing a demonstration you need to explain some stuff about that to users. And for the demonstration part you also need to focus on user interests. When you know all this point the job is not finished, indeed if my user is interested about general usage of a desktop environment, you probably want to show to him general stuff of KDE like plasma, dolphin… And the more complicated thing come here, ok you have identified what the users want to know about KDE, but now there is a question: How I can do a good demonstration of a KDE product? Sorry I can’t answer to this, because I don’t have a good answer.

But I think a first way is to show to him the software functionnalities, that’s why I suggest to share data about main feature of each KDE application in order to help people to do good demonstration of KDE software like a bullet list for each one.

A second way can be to share some videos on the way to presents KDE software but in my opinion that’s too difficult to maintain videos with latest KDE things.Actually that is more easy to add a point to a list than a video.

Thanks for reading it and I hope we can have a good discussion about that in the future, and in the same time I’m joining the KDE-Promo mailing list. And I invite all French speakers who are interested in KDE promotion in France to join kde-events-fr mailing list.

We had a KDE-fr BoF yesterday. Until there, their were efforts done at several town PoV, but not really at the nation size. That’s why Benjamin and I decided first to do the aKademy-fr. We chose Toulouse (in the south) because we are from there, and because the community is really getting bigger and bigger with the years and the ervin’s efforts. It seems to be a great thing, well received by the french community. Guys from every where are willing to help us. Mister Renard is alreayd thinking in having the aKademy-fr 2012 in Paris. That’s great news !

We also talked of several other points I am trying to sum up here.

In which state is the KDE-France association:
It seems to be closed, most of the people there just disappeared. We have to look if it is possible to open it again, or to get it alive. By the way, it is not our priority to have this association alive. We already have several LUGs in France and the KDE e.V. can also help us when we need an official association. The global side of the KDE e.V. is also a good point when you need something official. The point is, we’ll make it alive as soon as possible, but there are already a lot of work to do before. Talking about that, we also noticed that most of the french LUGS were becoming distribution’s LUG… I mean, there are less and less “open source LUG” or “KDE/Gnome LUG” or whatever, there are “Ubuntu/Mandriva/… LUGs”. It is kind of scary because it splits the people, remove a big part of the share spirit we knew in the LUGs. We won’t talk about the fact most of the time, there are companies behind distributions…

What’s the state of the KDE community and activities in France:
Ervin’s as talked about the Toulouse state in his conference. The community seems to really be in a good way. There are many events managed now. There is not enough activity in Paris. There are only few people, and no students. The trouble is that the only one that are motivated have not the time to manage the community things. In fact, that’s the main trouble I can see here: we are not enough. We have to enroll more people, every where we can. A good solution would be to be more listenable, and to go to people is they don’t come to us. This idea leads us to the following point.

Which activities/parties/camp whatever should we be involved in to become more visible:
We have chosen more or less 3 events. Solution linux will still be followed by the KDE French community. We also have to make a big effort on the RMLL. We had not enough people there for the moment, we have to go with more people. Some guys are ready to move there when it is necessary, so we have to point them they have to go! Another movement we can really see (at least in France) is the Ubuntu community growing and growing. They manage most of parties, and meetings. Aurélien Gateau was explaining us they were looking for KDE guys to make talk there, but they never find a way to contact us (we’ll come back on the contact side later). Whatever, Aurélien is in a good mood with them and will introduce the FDE French community to them, because we are ready to make efforts there. It would really be appreciated by every one to have these kind of collaboration. That’s why we have already planned the aKademy-fr in the same event of the Toulouse Ubuntu Party, and also the drupal conf. It becomes a big event and we’ll be listened there we hope. For now, we cannot do more than these main events because we are not enough, and all the free days we have from our jobs are going in there… we cannot enforce every one to do the same thing. Now let’s talk a bit more about the how-to-contact-us- and how-to-make-the-community-alive.

What are the ways to be listened:
Several ways are possible for us, every thing is good if it keeps the attention of someone. But we have to focus on the best way and most used ones. A good one is the mailing lists. It seems to be really active on kde-francophone, and not on kde-events-fr. We’ll try some crossed-send mails to involve some active kde-francophone guys into kde-events-fr. That’s reality that the french translation team is really alive, and active. They are about 30 people more or less active, but not inactive. 10 of them are REALLY active. That kind of guys like the community would like to help the community side too, they just have to know how to do. We are working on that. Another way to show the world we are alive is the website and forum. fr.kde.org were broken, and it should be alive before the end of August again, YEAH! It will be a wordpress integrated website, so it will be easy to put news on it, and we’ll do it for sure. Events will be announced, some news “blog looking” will be added as often as possible. We also HAVE to be more active on the forum.kde.org KDE-Francophone side. I’ll handle point and point friends to look at it more often. To be on #kde-fr on IRC:freenode couldn’t hurt neither, so let’s make the chan rocks!

So here were the moments of the BoF of KDE-fr. We also give ourself some tasks to go in this way, or to do the future events be a success

See you soon.

There were not only KDE guys! For instance, the toulibre [1] president was there. He is really motivated on helping us making the KDE community bigger. We planned to manage some meetings, something like aKademy-fr is getting real now !

You can also look at some pictures that Kévin Ottens had taken for the event here. Some people were missing, but we had a thought for them .

Hello,

For the 4.6 release party we did the things big, and it worked really great! A lot of people came, and enjoyed the 2 days party. You can still find all the great presentations we have filmed. The presentations, videos and details are still here for those who missed it: http://www.toulibre.org/kde46

Well, that’s past facts, let’s look at the future now. We are currently organizing, with the toulibre association help, the KDE 4.7 Release Party in Toulouse. This time, we have taken a smaller format for this party. No long discuss, not a full week-end booked, … It will happen in a restaurant, around healthy food and some cocktails. This it will happen the good day: July the 27th, at about 8pm, and not two months after the release itself …

So if you are ready to have fun with us and discuss around the future of KDE, just suscribe here (http://www.toulibre.org/kde47), and come. You can also find some more details on this page

Thanks for reading.

*-*-*-*-*-*

Bonjour à tous,

Pour la release de la 4.6, nous avions vu les choses en grand : 2 jours de confs, affiches, buffets le premier soir.. Ça a d’ailleurs bien fonctionné.

Merci.
